1. Virginia Becomes a State. On June 11, 1788, Virginia became the tenth state to ratify the United States Constitution, making it a part of the new federal union. Virginia played a significant role in the creation of the Constitution, with its own George Washington chairing the Constitutional Convention.

2. Historic Church Reopens. On June 11, 2011, the historic Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg reopened its doors after a two-year restoration project. Founded in 1674, the church has hosted numerous famous figures including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry.

3. A Presidential Visit. On June 11, 1875, Ulysses S. Grant visited the city of Staunton in Virginia during his presidency. Grant was known for his famous military victories during the Civil War, and was the 18th President of the United States.

4. Aviation History. On June 11, 1928, famed aviator Richard E. Byrd flew his Fokker airplane over Virginia, en route to his historic flight over the North Pole. Byrd was a World War I veteran and became famous for his exploration and scientific research in Antarctica.

5. Virginia Joins the Union. On June 11, 1864, during the Civil War, West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state of the United States. The new state was carved out of Virginia and was created as a result of the growing divide over slavery and other issues in the region.
