1. On June 13, 1927, the city of Austin voted to authorize construction of the state Capitol building. The iconic pink granite structure, standing 308 feet tall, was completed and dedicated four years later.

2. In 1836, Texan soldiers under Col. James W. Fannin were marched out of Goliad and executed by Mexican forces during the Texas Revolution. This tragedy, known as the Goliad Massacre, occurred on March 27 but is remembered on June 13 as the day when the news of the atrocity reached other Texan soldiers.

3. On June 13, 1942, the German submarine U-boat 166 sank the SS Alcoa Puritan off the coast of Texas. This was one of many attacks on American shipping during World War II.

4. Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared June 13 to be “Chris Kyle Day” in 2015, in honor of the late Navy SEAL and author of “American Sniper.” Kyle, a native of Texas, was known as the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.

5. In 1839, the city of Houston was incorporated as a municipality. It was named after Sam Houston, who helped lead the fight for Texas independence and later served as the state’s first president and governor. Today, Houston is the largest city in Texas and one of the most diverse cities in the United States.
