1. Statehood Day: June 20 is celebrated as West Virginia Day, but the state's admission to the Union was actually recognized on June 20, 1863. West Virginia was created as a result of the Civil War, when Virginia seceded from the Union and a group of loyal Virginia counties decided to form their own state.

2. The Battle of Cool Spring: On June 16, 1864, Union forces clashed with Confederate troops in a battle near Charles Town. The Confederate army was attempting to carry out a raid on Union supply lines, but the Union forces were able to repel the attack and force the Confederates to retreat.

3. The Great Kanawha River Flood: On June 16, 2016, parts of West Virginia experienced severe flooding, with 23 people losing their lives and many more being displaced or losing property. The flooding was caused by heavy rainfall, and many residents had to be rescued from their homes by boat or helicopter.

4. Prohibition: West Virginia was one of the first states to pass a statewide prohibition law, which went into effect on July 1, 1914. However, it was widely ignored, and the state became known for its bootlegging and moonshining activities during the Prohibition era.

5. West Virginia's First Governor: Arthur I. Boreman, a lawyer and politician from Tyler County, was West Virginia's first governor after the state's admission to the Union. Boreman was also a delegate to the 1861 Virginia Secession Convention, where he voted against secession and became an advocate for the creation of a separate state.
