1. The first reported tornado in Colorado history touched down on June 17, 1870, in Elbert County. The twister destroyed four houses and killed three people.

2. The Colorado State Capitol building was dedicated on June 17, 1894. The building, designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, features a central dome that is covered in 24-karat gold leaf.

3. On June 17, 1969, the Colorado Rockies were awarded a National Hockey League (NHL) expansion team. The team played in Denver until 1982, when they moved to New Jersey and became the Devils.

4. In 1994, the Colorado Rockies set a Major League Baseball record by scoring 13 runs in one inning on June 17 against the San Francisco Giants.

5. On June 17, 2015, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed a bill legalizing physician-assisted suicide. Colorado became the sixth state to allow terminally ill patients to end their own lives with medication prescribed by a doctor.
