2. On June 18, 1942, the USS Herring submarine was sunk by a Japanese destroyer while serving in the Sea of Japan. Of the 80 crew members, none survived the attack. The Herring was the first American submarine to be lost during World War II.
3. In 2005, the Arkansas State Capitol was designated as a National Historic Landmark. The building was completed in 1915 and serves as the seat of government for the state of Arkansas.
