1. In 1859, the first public school in San Francisco opened its doors. Called the Denman School, it provided a free education to children of all backgrounds and laid the foundation for the city's public school system.

2. On June 18, 1942, the U.S. Navy established the Naval Construction Training Center in Port Hueneme, Ventura County. Known as Camp Bedilion, it was the largest such facility in the country and trained Seabees for duty in World War II.

3. In 1983, Sally Ride became the first woman to fly in space as a crew member on the space shuttle Challenger. Born in Los Angeles, Ride went on to become a physics professor and an advocate for STEM education.

4. On June 18, 1994, former football star O.J. Simpson was involved in a high-speed car chase on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. The chase followed Simpson's alleged involvement in the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

5. In 2013, the Yarnell Hill Fire began in northern Arizona and eventually claimed the lives of 19 firefighters from the Granite Mountain Hotshots, based in Prescott, California. The tragedy led to an outpouring of support from the community and a renewed focus on the dangers faced by first responders.
