2. In 1910, the Virginia State Corporation Commission was created to regulate railroad, telephone, and telegraph companies. Today, the Commission continues to regulate these industries along with natural gas, electric, and water companies.
3. In 1942, the United States Army established Camp Patrick Henry in Newport News as a major port of embarkation for troops and supplies during World War II. The camp was named after Patrick Henry, Virginia's first governor and a famous American orator.
4. In 1978, the Virginia Slims tennis tournament was held in Richmond. The tournament was part of the Women's Tennis Association tour and featured many of the top players of the era, including Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.
5. In 2019, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced plans to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from its prominent location on Monument Avenue in Richmond. The decision was made in the wake of widespread protests and discussions about racial justice following the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.
