2. On June 23, 1917, the draft for World War I began in Georgia. Approximately 25% of all Georgia men registered for the draft, and over 100,000 Georgians served in the war.

3. In 1972, Georgia native Max Cleland lost both of his legs and an arm in Vietnam when a grenade exploded near him. He went on to serve as Georgia's Secretary of State and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996, serving until 2003.

4. On June 23, 1995, the Atlanta Braves became the first team in Major League Baseball history to win 10,000 games. The Braves defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-4 in 12 innings.

5. Georgia native Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech for the first time in Georgia on June 23, 1963, at an NAACP rally in Dublin.
