1. In 1863, during the Civil War, a skirmish occurred in Westminster, Maryland. Confederate soldiers attempted to raid the town, but Union troops were able to repulse their attack.

2. On June 23, 1939, the Maryland State Police was officially established. Prior to this, law enforcement duties were primarily carried out by county sheriffs and local police departments.

3. In 1969, the University of Maryland announced it would be expanding its College Park campus to include a new medical center. The University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore had previously been the state's primary medical facility.

4. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal officially opened on June 23, 1834. The canal, which stretches from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland, was used to transport coal, lumber, and other goods between the two locations.

5. In 1788, Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the United States Constitution. Prior to this, the state had been one of the few holdouts in accepting the new form of government.
