1. In 1819, the Alabama Territory was created by an act of the United States Congress, which set the stage for Alabama to become the 22nd state in the Union two years later on December 14, 1819.

2. On June 26, 1865, the last Confederate military unit to surrender in the Civil War was the CSS Shenandoah. The ship surrendered in Liverpool, England, more than two months after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House effectively ended the conflict.

3. In 1934, the first drive-in theater in Alabama was opened in Birmingham by local businessman Hollingsworth Realty Company. The theater, called the Vestavia Drive-In, could accommodate up to 500 cars and was one of more than 4,000 drive-ins that operated in the United States between the 1930s and the 1950s.

4. On June 26, 1963, civil rights activist Medgar Evers was assassinated outside his home in Jackson, Mississippi. Evers had worked for more than a decade to end racial segregation and promote voting rights for African Americans in the South, including Alabama.

5. In 2015, the United States Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide with its ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. The landmark decision struck down bans on same-sex marriage in Alabama and other states, paving the way for marriage equality in the United States.
