1. In 1870, the Colorado Territorial Legislature established the University of Colorado in Boulder. It was the first university in the state and only the second public university in the region.
2. In 1948, the first international flight landed at Stapleton Airport in Denver. A British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) flight from London to New York made a stop in Denver, marking the airport's first international arrival.
3. In 1975, the Colorado Rockies professional hockey team was born. The team played in Denver until 1982, when it moved to New Jersey and became the Devils.
4. In 1987, a massive forest fire broke out in northern Colorado. Over 40,000 acres were burned and 25 homes were destroyed. The fire, known as the Big Elk Meadows Fire, was finally contained on July 6.
5. In 2015, the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs made history by appointing the first openly gay commandant of cadets. Brig. Gen. Kristin Goodwin took over as the head of the academy's 4,000 cadets.
