1. In 1638, the first European settlement was established in what is now St. Mary's County, Maryland. The settlement was named St. Mary's City and became the capital of Maryland until 1695.

2. On June 26, 1788, Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the United States Constitution. The state's ratification helped secure the necessary nine states needed to establish the new government.

3. In 1833, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company was chartered by Maryland and Virginia. The canal, which stretched from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland, provided a vital transportation link for the region.

4. On June 26, 1895, the first automobile in Maryland was reportedly driven by William Harrison in Baltimore. The car was a gasoline-powered Duryea Motor Wagon.

5. In 1912, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad opened the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) passenger terminal in Washington, D.C. The terminal was home to the C&O's luxury trains, including the famous "George Washington" and "Chessie."
