1. The Buffalo Soldiers

On June 27, 1869, the Buffalo Soldiers were dispatched to New Mexico to help establish law and order in the territory. The African American soldiers were assigned to Fort Bascom and Fort Union and were instrumental in protecting civilians from Native American raids during the Indian Wars.

2. The Trinity Test

On June 27, 1945, the world's first atomic bomb was tested at the Trinity Site in southern New Mexico. The test was kept secret from the general public and was carried out by the United States during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project.

3. The New Mexico Statehood Centennial

June 27, 2012, marked the 100th anniversary of New Mexico's admission to the Union as the 47th state. To celebrate, the state held various events throughout the year, including parades, concerts, and cultural exhibits.

4. The Roswell Incident

On June 27, 1947, a United States Army Air Forces balloon crashed at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. The military initially stated that it was a weather balloon, but many people believe that the incident was a cover-up for the crash of an extraterrestrial UFO.

5. The New Mexico Museum of Space History

On June 27, 1976, the New Mexico Museum of Space History opened its doors to the public. Located in Alamogordo, the museum features exhibits on space exploration and the history of rocketry, as well as a planetarium and a large collection of space memorabilia.
