4. In 1864, the Battle of Winooski Bridge took place during the American Civil War. Confederate soldiers under the command of General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at the bridge in an attempt to capture the city of Burlington. The Union forces, however, were able to hold off the Confederate attack and repel the invaders.
5. In 1973, Vermont became the first state to ban billboards along its highways. The law was passed in an effort to preserve Vermont's scenic beauty and promote tourism in the state. Today, Vermont is still known for its beautiful landscapes and small-town charm.
