1. In 1776, Virginia became the first colony to adopt a state constitution, paving the way for the formation of the United States. The Virginia Declaration of Rights, written by George Mason, was also adopted on this day, laying out basic human rights and serving as an inspiration for the Bill of Rights.

2. On June 29, 1862, the Battle of Savage's Station was fought during the American Civil War. The Union army, led by Major General Edwin V. Sumner, fought a rear-guard action against Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. Although the Union forces were outnumbered and outflanked, they were able to delay the Confederate advance and prevent a complete rout.

3. In 1919, the Virginia State Highway Commission was created to oversee the construction and maintenance of roads in the state. This led to the expansion of the state highway system and the development of a modern transportation infrastructure in Virginia.

4. On June 29, 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Loving v. Virginia that state bans on interracial marriage were unconstitutional. The case, brought by Richard and Mildred Loving, a black man and a white woman who were convicted of violating Virginia's anti-miscegenation law, set a precedent for marriage equality and paved the way for the legalization of same-sex marriage.

5. In 2018, the Virginia General Assembly voted to expand Medicaid, providing health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of low-income residents of the state. The move was seen as a significant victory for advocates of universal health care and a step towards reducing the number of uninsured people in Virginia.
