1. The first free public library in South Carolina opened on June 30, 1893, in Darlington. The library was founded by the Women's Christian Temperance Union and was originally housed in a small room in the courthouse.
2. On June 30, 1832, South Carolina passed the Nullification Ordinance, which declared federal tariffs unconstitutional and unenforceable within the state. This led to a crisis that was eventually resolved by the Compromise of 1833.
3. June 30, 1923, marked the opening of the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston. At the time, it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world and was considered a major engineering achievement.
4. On June 30, 1864, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain took place during the American Civil War. The battle, which was fought outside of Atlanta, Georgia, was a Confederate victory and resulted in heavy losses for Union troops.
5. June 30, 1969, marked the opening of the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston. The aquarium has since become one of the state's top tourist attractions and is home to over 5,000 animals representing over 60 species.
