1. In 1917, the Pueblo Steel Strike began on June 5, when approximately 12,000 steelworkers went on strike from the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation. This strike ultimately turned violent and resulted in the deaths of at least 6 people and the arrest of approximately 700.

2. On June 5, 1976, the Big Thompson Flood devastated the town of Estes Park and killed 144 people. The flood was caused by a sudden and intense thunderstorm that dropped over 12 inches of rain in just a few hours.

3. In 2002, the Hayman Fire broke out on June 5 in central Colorado. The fire burned almost 138,000 acres and destroyed 133 homes, making it the largest wildfire in Colorado history at the time.

4. On June 5, 2010, the Royal Gorge Bridge, a popular tourist attraction in Colorado, caught fire from a nearby wildfire. The bridge, which crosses the Arkansas River at a height of 955 feet, sustained significant damage.

5. June 5 is also celebrated as National Trails Day, a day dedicated to celebrating and maintaining trails in the United States. Colorado boasts over 39,000 miles of trails, including portions of the famed Continental Divide Trail.
