1. On June 5, 1943, the Louisiana Maneuvers began. This massive military exercise involved more than 400,000 soldiers and was designed to test the Army's preparedness for war. It took place across more than 19,000 square miles in Louisiana and Texas.

2. The Battle of Baton Rouge took place on June 5, 1862, during the Civil War. Confederate forces under the command of General John C. Breckinridge unsuccessfully attempted to retake the city from Union forces led by General Thomas Williams.

3. On June 5, 1933, Huey P. Long Jr. signed the Louisiana State Sales Tax Bill into law. The bill created a 2% sales tax on all items sold in the state, generating more than $10 million in revenue in its first year. Long used the money to fund education and social welfare programs.

4. The Louisiana Superdome, now known as the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, officially opened on June 5, 1975. The iconic stadium has hosted numerous major events, including seven Super Bowls, five NCAA Final Fours, and the Sugar Bowl.

5. Louisiana-born astronaut Ellen Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman in space on June 5, 1991. Ochoa, who grew up in California but was born in Los Angeles, served as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-40 mission. She went on to fly three more space missions and eventually became the director of the Johnson Space Center.
