3. In 1944, during World War II, more than 150,000 American, British, and Canadian troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, in what became known as D-Day. Many soldiers from Pennsylvania were among those who fought and died in the operation.

4. In 1966, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission approved the construction of a new highway that would become known as the Northeast Extension, connecting the Lehigh Valley to Scranton and Wilkes-Barre in the northeast part of the state.

5. In 1987, the first American woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, Stacy Allison, was honored with a parade in her hometown of Portland, Oregon. Allison's climbing partner on the expedition was Tom Hornbein, a physician and mountaineer from Philadelphia, who was the first person to ever climb a difficult route on the West Ridge of Everest.
