1. In 1864, the Battle of Monocacy began in Frederick County, Maryland, during the American Civil War. The battle lasted for two days, and although the Union forces ultimately lost, they were able to delay the Confederate advance towards Washington, D.C. This delay gave the Union time to reinforce their defenses and ultimately led to the Confederate army's defeat at the Battle of Fort Stevens in July of that year.

2. On June 7, 1965, the United States Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in Griswold v. Connecticut, striking down a Connecticut law that prohibited the use of contraception. The case established the constitutional right to privacy and served as a precursor to the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationwide.

3. In 1664, Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, passed away in Maryland. Calvert was the founder of the colony of Maryland, which was established as a haven for English Catholics in the early 17th century.

4. On June 7, 1937, a fire erupted in the German passenger airship Hindenburg as it was landing at the Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey. The Hindenburg had made a transatlantic crossing from Germany and was carrying 97 passengers and crew members. The disaster claimed the lives of 36 people, including 13 passengers, 22 crew members, and one ground worker. Many of the victims were from Maryland, which had a strong connection to the airship industry.

5. In 1991, the Baltimore Orioles retired the jersey of former pitcher Jim Palmer, who had worn number 22 during his 19-year career with the team. Palmer was a three-time Cy Young Award winner and helped lead the Orioles to three World Series championships. He remains one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the game and a beloved figure in Maryland sports history.
