1. In 1776, Vermont declared independence from Britain and established its own constitution, becoming the first state to do so before the American Revolution officially ended. The constitutional convention began on June 7th and lasted until July 8th.

2. In 1863, the Battle of Hubbardton was fought in Vermont during the Civil War. It was a minor engagement, but it was significant because it was one of only two battles fought exclusively between American soldiers during the war.

3. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh made a historic flight over the Atlantic Ocean, landing in Paris after a 33-hour journey. The flight had not stopped in Vermont, but Lindbergh did fly over the state on his way to New York before beginning the journey.

4. In 1972, the Newport Jazz Festival was held in Vermont for the first time. The festival had previously been held in Newport, Rhode Island, but was moved to Vermont to avoid conflicts with the Newport Folk Festival.

5. In 2017, Vermont became the ninth state in the US to legalize recreational marijuana. Governor Phil Scott signed the bill on June 7th, making it legal for adults over the age of 21 to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and to grow up to two mature plants.
