1) On June 9, 1910, the city of Phoenix officially became the capital of Arizona. Prior to this date, the capital had been located in Prescott and Tucson.

2) In 1979, on June 9th, the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park opened to the public. The prison had operated from 1876 to 1909 and housed more than 3,000 inmates during its time in operation.

3) On June 9, 1934, Executive Order No. 6910 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This order transferred the responsibility of the Tonto National Forest from the General Land Office to the U.S. Forest Service.

4) In 1862, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces invaded Arizona and seized control of the territory. On June 9th of that year, Union troops led by Colonel James H. Carleton defeated Confederate troops at the Battle of Picacho Pass, putting an end to the Confederate occupation.

5) June 9, 1961 saw the opening of Kartchner Caverns State Park near Benson, Arizona. The park features an extensive cave system that was only discovered in 1974 and opened to the public in 1999. The caves contain some of the largest and most impressive formations in the world.
