1. Nevada Day was not always celebrated on October 31st. In fact, from its creation as a holiday in 1933 until 2000, Nevada Day was celebrated on March 1st to commemorate the state's admission to the Union. It was moved to the last Friday in October to give state employees a three-day weekend.

2. March 1, 1936, marked the opening of Hoover Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the world. The project, which started in 1931, provided thousands of jobs and boosted the economy of southern Nevada. The dam continues to provide power to Nevada and other southwestern states.
