1. In 1818, Indiana Governor Jonathan Jennings signed legislation to establish a new county in the state. The county was named Sullivan after American Revolutionary War General John Sullivan and was formed from portions of Knox and Indian Creek counties.

2. On March 13, 1843, Indiana Governor Samuel Bigger signed legislation to officially establish the Indiana State Library. The library was originally housed in the Statehouse and served as a repository for government documents, legal materials, and other reference materials.

3. In 1894, the Indiana General Assembly passed a law creating a state board of health to regulate public health practices in the state. This board was tasked with ensuring the purity of food and water, preventing the spread of infectious diseases, and regulating sanitation and hygiene practices.

4. On March 13, 1925, the famous Scopes Monkey Trial began in Tennessee. Although the trial did not take place in Indiana, it had a significant impact on the state and the country as a whole. The trial centered on the teaching of evolution in schools and was seen as a battle between religious fundamentalism and scientific progressivism.

5. In 1943, the Indiana legislature passed a law authorizing the creation of the Indiana State Police Department. The department was established to provide statewide law enforcement services and to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of Indiana. The department is still in operation today and is one of the oldest state police departments in the country.
