1. In 1875, the Kentucky General Assembly passed a law banning dueling. This law was in response to the death of former Kentucky Senator John W. Stephens, who was killed in a duel on March 13, 1875. Despite the ban, dueling continued to be a part of Kentucky culture well into the 20th century.

2. On March 13, 1899, the Kentucky Coal Association was formed in Louisville, Kentucky. The organization was created to represent the interests of coal producers and miners in the state. Today, coal continues to be an important industry in Kentucky, although it has declined significantly in recent years.

3. In 1901, the Kentucky Military Institute (KMI) was established in Lyndon, Kentucky. The school was founded by Major J. B. Castleman and offered military training to young men. KMI operated for over 80 years before it closed in 1971 due to financial difficulties.

4. On March 13, 1948, the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team won their second NCAA championship. The Wildcats defeated the Baylor Bears 58-42 in the final game played at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This was the first NCAA championship for legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp.

5. In 2003, a powerful tornado struck parts of Kentucky on March 13, causing significant damage and claiming 24 lives. The tornado, which was part of a larger outbreak of severe weather across the southern United States, was classified as an F4 on the Fujita scale and had wind speeds of up to 260 miles per hour. The town of West Liberty was especially hard hit, with many buildings completely destroyed.
