2. In 1877, the Black Hills were officially declared part of the Dakota Territory by President Ulysses S. Grant. The discovery of gold in the area had led to a rush of settlers, despite objections from the Sioux.
3. In 1913, the state of South Dakota passed a prohibition law, banning the sale and manufacture of alcohol. The law remained in place until 1933, when Prohibition was repealed.
4. In 1961, the Rapid City flood occurred, causing significant damage to the city and resulting in the loss of 238 lives. The flood was caused by a sudden downpour, which led to a surge of water rushing down the canyon where the city was located.
5. In 1993, the Wounded Knee siege came to an end after 71 days. The standoff began when armed members of the American Indian Movement occupied the town of Wounded Knee, a site of a massacre of Native American people by U.S. soldiers in 1890. The siege was eventually resolved through negotiation.
