On March 13, 1854, the US Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and established popular sovereignty, allowing settlers in those territories to decide whether or not to allow slavery. Wyoming was not yet a territory at that time, but the act would have a significant impact on the future of the region.

2. March 13, 1877, marked the founding of the town of Buford in southeastern Wyoming. Originally known as Lone Tree Station, the town grew around a Union Pacific Railroad depot and became an important stop on the transcontinental railroad. Today, Buford is known for its population of just one person, making it the smallest town in America.

3. On March 13, 1923, Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first woman to serve as governor of Wyoming. Ross, a Democrat, was elected to the position following the death of her husband, Governor William B. Ross. She served two terms as governor and went on to become the first woman to serve as director of the US Mint.

4. March 13, 1941, saw the opening of the Heart Mountain Relocation Center near Cody, Wyoming. The center was one of ten internment camps established by the US government during World War II to house Japanese Americans who were forcibly removed from their homes on the West Coast. The camp would hold over 10,000 Japanese Americans during its three-year operation.

5. On March 13, 1983, the Wyoming Legislature passed a bill establishing the Wyoming Lottery, making Wyoming the 25th state to have a state lottery. The first tickets were sold in 2014, and since then, the lottery has generated millions of dollars in revenue for the state.
