1. In 1888, Wyoming territory Governor Francis E. Warren signed the bill that approved the construction of the University of Wyoming, the state's first public university. The university opened its doors to students on September 7, 1887.

2. On March 15, 1909, the Wyoming legislature passed a law that made it illegal to import, sell or transport into the state any alcoholic liquors except for medicinal, pharmaceutical and scientific purposes. The law remained in effect until 1933 when prohibition was repealed.

3. In 1922, the Cheyenne Kiwanis Club sponsored the first grizzly bear hunt in Wyoming. The hunters were able to track down and kill two grizzly bears, one of which weighed over 800 pounds.

4. On March 15, 1944, Wyoming native and World War II hero Lieutenant Colonel William O. Darby was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership during the invasion of Italy. Later that year, he would go on to form the elite Army Rangers.

5. In 1972, the first female governor in United States history, Nellie Tayloe Ross, passed away in Washington, D.C. Ross was born in Missouri in 1876 but moved to Wyoming with her husband after he was elected governor in 1922. She became governor herself after his death in 1924 and was re-elected in 1926.
