1. In 1750, the town of Keene was incorporated by New Hampshire's colonial governor, Benning Wentworth. Keene later became known for its manufacturing industry and is now home to Keene State College.

The system includes the University of New Hampshire, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, and Granite State College.
