4. On March 19, 1948, the Michigan State Board of Education declared that the state's official flag would be blue with the state coat of arms in the center. The design was chosen from submissions by Michigan residents in a statewide contest.
5. In 1986, the Michigan Wolverines basketball team won the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. Led by head coach Bill Frieder and star players Roy Tarpley and Gary Grant, the team defeated Seton Hall in the championship game. It remains the only men's basketball national championship in the school's history.
