1. Delaware became the first state to ratify the United States Constitution on March 2, 1787. This event is celebrated annually as Delaware Day.

2. On March 2, 1829, the Delaware legislature passed a law outlawing dueling in the state. Previously, dueling had been a common method of settling disputes among Delaware's wealthy and influential residents.

3. In 1863, Union troops under General Alfred H. Terry captured Fort Anderson, a Confederate stronghold on the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. Many of the soldiers who participated in the attack were from Delaware regiments.

4. On March 2, 1923, Delaware Governor William D. Denney signed a law establishing the University of Delaware as a state-supported institution. The university had previously been a private school known as Delaware College.

5. In 1962, W. Andy Meseroll was elected as the first African American member of the Delaware House of Representatives. Meseroll, a Democrat from Wilmington, served in the House from 1963 to 1966.
