1. In 1836, North Carolina became the first state to launch a public school system. The system was initiated by Governor Edward B. Dudley and created a network of free public schools throughout the state.

2. In 1861, North Carolina voted to secede from the United States and join the Confederate States of America. The state played a significant role in the Civil War, providing soldiers and supplies to the Confederate army.

3. In 1903, the Wright brothers made their first powered flight in North Carolina. The brothers had chosen the state for its favorable weather conditions and proximity to their home base in Ohio.

4. In 1971, North Carolina ratified the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. The state was one of the first to ratify the amendment.

5. In 1983, North Carolina State University won its first NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Coached by the legendary Jim Valvano, the Wolfpack upset the heavily favored Houston Cougars in the title game.
