5. In 1911, Amelia Earhart visited the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas, to attend a launch party for a new automobile. It was here that Earhart, who was then a student at Columbia University, reportedly told a friend that she wanted to fly someday. Less than ten years later, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.
