1. In 1643, the first meeting of the New Hampshire General Court was held in Portsmouth. This was the first legislative assembly in what is now the United States.

2. In 1765, citizens of Portsmouth, New Hampshire held a massive protest against the Stamp Act. This act was passed by the British government and required a tax to be paid on all printed materials in the American colonies. The protests in Portsmouth were one of the first of many protests that led to the American Revolution.

3. In 1861, New Hampshire Governor Nathaniel S. Berry proclaimed March 21 as a day of fasting and prayer. This was in response to the start of the Civil War, which had begun just a few weeks earlier.

4. In 1879, the first electric lights were installed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire by Thomas Edison himself. This was one of the first places in the world to have electric street lights.

5. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh landed at the Manchester Airport in New Hampshire during his famous solo transatlantic flight. Lindbergh's flight was a major achievement in aviation history and his landing in New Hampshire was celebrated by locals.
