1. In 1638, the first permanent European settlement was established in New Jersey by a group of Swedish immigrants. The settlement, known as New Sweden, was located on the banks of the Delaware River and included land in what is now New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

2. On March 22, 1867, Rutgers University became the first college in the United States to officially play a game of intercollegiate football. The game was played against Princeton University, and Rutgers won by a score of 6-4.

3. In 1907, the first drive-in movie theater in the United States was opened in Camden, New Jersey. The theater, called the Park-In, could accommodate up to 400 cars and was an immediate success.

4. On March 22, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Beer and Wine Revenue Act, which legalized the sale of beer and wine for the first time since Prohibition began in 1920. The law was a small step towards the eventual repeal of Prohibition in 1933.

5. In 1945, the ship carrying the bodies of the four Chaplains who gave up their life jackets and went down with the USAT Dorchester after it was torpedoed was brought to New York Harbor for an official memorial service. The Four Chaplains Memorial, located at the chapel of the United States Coast Guard Academy, honors the courage of these four men.
