1. In 1775, the Georgia Provincial Congress adopted resolutions to support the colonists in their fight for independence from British rule. The congress called for the creation of militia companies and authorized the use of military force against those who refused to support the American cause.

2. In 1865, during the final weeks of the Civil War, Union forces under General James Wilson raided the city of Columbus, Georgia. The raid resulted in the destruction of military and industrial targets, including a powder works and a textile mill. The Union forces also burned bridges and railroad tracks, severing Confederate supply lines.

3. In 1901, the first interurban electric railway in Georgia opened between Atlanta and Athens. The Georgia Railway and Electric Company operated the line, which ran 72 miles and had several stops along the way. The interurban service was popular until the development of automobiles and highways in the 1920s.

4. In 1973, the Georgia General Assembly approved a new state flag that featured the current state seal against a blue field with the words "State of Georgia" and "1776" in gold letters. The new flag replaced the controversial Confederate battle emblem, which had been part of the state flag since 1956.

5. In 2005, the Georgia General Assembly passed the Water Stewardship Act, which aimed to protect the state's water resources from pollution and overuse. The act created the Georgia Environmental Protection Division's Water Conservation Program and established policies to promote water conservation and efficient water use.
