1. In 1862, Confederate forces under General Earl Van Dorn attacked Union forces led by General William S. Rosecrans at the Battle of Lavergne, Tennessee. Although the Confederates initially gained ground, they were ultimately repelled by Union reinforcements and forced to retreat.

2. Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver was born on March 23, 1903, in Madisonville. Kefauver was a lawyer and politician who served in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. He is perhaps best known for his work investigating organized crime in the 1950s, which helped lead to the creation of the modern-day witness protection program.

3. On March 23, 1973, Elvis Presley's concert at the Civic Center in Knoxville had to be cut short due to bomb threats. The show had started hours late due to technical problems, and Presley had only managed to perform a few songs before the threats were called in.

4. In 1983, the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga opened to the public. The aquarium is home to more than 12,000 animals from over 800 species, and has become a popular tourist destination in the state.

5. March 23, 1994, saw a historic snowstorm hit Tennessee. Over 20 inches of snow fell in parts of the state, causing widespread power outages and transportation disruptions. The storm was one of the largest and most severe in Tennessee's history, and caused an estimated $180 million in damages.
