4. On March 25, 1942, the United States Army Air Corps activated the 312th Fighter Squadron in Tampa. The squadron was part of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American pilots trained by the US military.

5. In 1986, the Space Shuttle Atlantis made its first flight from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The mission was to deploy a communications satellite and conduct a series of experiments in space. Today, the Atlantis is on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.
