1. In 1790, the first United States Census began. Tennessee, which was then known as the Southwest Territory, was also included in the count. The initial census revealed that the Southwest Territory had a population of around 35,000.

2. On March 26, 1804, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a law establishing the state's first public school system. This was a significant development for education in Tennessee and the nation as a whole.

3. In 1827, the city of Knoxville, Tennessee was incorporated. Knoxville, which was the state's first capital, grew to become one of Tennessee's most culturally and economically significant cities, with a population of around 187,000 people today.

4. On March 26, 1865, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston assumed command of the Army of Tennessee. Johnston, who had previously served as the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, led the Army of Tennessee in a series of battles against Union forces in the Carolinas.

5. In 1909, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was established. The TVA was created as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs and was designed to provide economic development and flood control in the Tennessee Valley. Today, the TVA remains an important institution in the region, supplying power to millions of people and helping to support the economy.
