1. In 1835, the Dade Massacre occurred near Bushnell, Florida. Seminole Indians ambushed a group of 108 soldiers under the command of Major Francis L. Dade, killing all but three.

2. In 1942, the MacDill Air Force Base was activated in Tampa, Florida. This base is home to the U.S. Central Command and the U.S. Special Operations Command.

3. In 1979, the famous Cuban boxer Teófilo Stevenson fought his last amateur boxing match in Miami, Florida. He was considered one of the best amateur boxers of all time, winning gold medals at three consecutive Olympic Games.

4. In 1984, the first MTV spring break special was filmed in Daytona Beach, Florida. This launched a yearly tradition of filming college students partying on the beach during spring break.

5. In 2007, a devastating tornado outbreak occurred across central Florida. There were 20 confirmed tornadoes, which caused significant damage and killed 21 people.
