1. 1768: The Treaty of Fort Stanwix is signed between the Iroquois Confederacy and Great Britain. The treaty ceded all Iroquois lands south of the Ohio River to the British, including parts of present-day Louisiana.
2. 1862: The Battle of Glorieta Pass takes place in New Mexico, during the American Civil War. Louisiana soldiers fought on both sides of the conflict.
3. 1930: The Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola Prison, begins operations. It remains one of the largest maximum-security prisons in the U.S.
4. 1981: The Louisiana Superdome hosts the NCAA Final Four basketball tournament for the first time. The event returned to New Orleans in 1982, 1987, 1993, and 2003.
5. 2005: Hurricane Katrina damages or destroys more than 200,000 homes in Louisiana, including much of the city of New Orleans. The storm causes the worst natural disaster in U.S. history, and the recovery effort continues to this day.
