1. The first territorial governor of Kansas was appointed on March 30, 1854. Andrew Horatio Reeder was named governor of the newly created Kansas Territory by President Franklin Pierce.
2. On March 30, 1867, the state geological survey of Kansas was established. This survey, which is part of the Kansas Geological Survey, is responsible for studying the geology and mineral resources of the state.
3. In 1940, the first woman to serve on the Kansas Supreme Court was appointed on March 30. Mildred S. Riddle was appointed by Governor Payne Ratner and served on the court until 1959.
4. On March 30, 1974, the Midwest City tornado struck Kansas and Oklahoma, killing 21 people and causing millions of dollars in damages. The tornado, which was rated F4 on the Fujita scale, was one of the deadliest in the history of both states.
5. The University of Kansas won the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship on March 30, 2008. The Jayhawks defeated the Memphis Tigers in overtime to win their third national championship. Mario Chalmers hit a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.
