1. In 1877, the University of North Dakota was founded on March 4th as the first institution of higher education in the state. It began with just a handful of students and has since grown to become the largest university in North Dakota.

2. On March 4, 1907, North Dakota became the first state to legalize women's suffrage. This law allowed women to vote in all elections, including local and statewide elections, and was a major victory for the women's rights movement.

3. In 1933, a major blizzard struck North Dakota on March 4th, dumping up to 20 inches of snow in some areas and causing widespread damage and disruption. The storm was so severe that it came to be known as the "big one" and is still remembered today as one of the worst blizzards in state history.

4. March 4, 1954 was the day that the North Dakota State Capitol building in Bismarck was officially dedicated. Designed by architect Joseph Bell DeRemer, the Capitol is an iconic symbol of North Dakota and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state.

5. On March 4, 1987, North Dakota Senator Quentin Burdick introduced a bill to create the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This legislation was eventually signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1992, establishing a national park in western North Dakota to honor the legacy of the 26th President of the United States, who spent time ranching and hunting in the area.
