1. The Indiana State Senate passed the first law prohibiting racial intermarriage in the state on March 5, 1831. This law was later repealed in 1965 as part of the Civil Rights Movement.

2. On March 5, 1851, the Indiana General Assembly approved the construction of the first state-funded psychiatric hospital in Indiana. This hospital, known as the Indiana Hospital for the Insane, was located in Indianapolis and opened in 1855.
