2. In 1853, the newly appointed governor of New Mexico Territory, David Meriwether, arrived in Santa Fe. Meriwether participated in the establishment of the US-Mexico border and was present at the signing of the Gadsden Purchase, which added southern Arizona and New Mexico to the United States.

3. On March 5, 1862, Union troops under the command of Colonel Edward Canby captured Fort Defiance from Confederate forces during the Civil War. The fort was strategically located at the intersection of major trade routes and provided crucial protection for Union soldiers and civilians against Confederate raids.

4. In 1910, the New Mexico State Penitentiary officially opened in Santa Fe. The facility was the first publicly owned and operated prison in the state and housed both male and female inmates until the construction of separate facilities in the 1920s.
