1. In 1867, John L. Sullivan, an Irish-American boxer and one of the most popular fighters of his time, was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Sullivan was the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, and his reign from 1882 to 1892 helped establish boxing as a mainstream sport. In March 1888, Sullivan fought Dominick McCaffrey in Cincinnati, Ohio, winning the bout by knockout in the ninth round.

2. On March 7, 1895, the Ohio State Legislature passed an act establishing the State Board of Agriculture, which was charged with promoting and developing the agricultural interests of the state. The board continues to operate today, providing Ohio farmers with a wide range of services and resources.

3. In 1912, the first ever rotary snowplow was put into service on the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad in Ohio. The rotary plow was developed by Canadian inventor J.W. Elliot and could move through deep snow drifts by using a circular blade to cut through the accumulation. The rotary plow was a major innovation in the railroad industry, and its use soon spread throughout North America.

4. On March 7, 1951, the Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball team won the first ever NCAA Tournament championship, defeating the California Golden Bears 75-55 in the final game. The Buckeyes were led by a dominant performance from center Bill Hosket, who scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the championship game.

5. In 1990, Dayton, Ohio became the first city in the United States to implement the 911 emergency system on a statewide basis. The 911 system provides a single, easy-to-remember number for people to call in emergencies, and has become an essential part of public safety infrastructure across the country. Today, nearly all of the more than 6,000 public safety answering points in the U.S. use the 911 system.
