2. In 1886, the Wyoming Territorial Penitentiary in Laramie was opened. It was the first prison in the Territory and was known for its harsh conditions, including the use of the "silent system" where prisoners were not allowed to speak to each other.

3. In 1903, the University of Wyoming defeated the University of Colorado in the first football game between the two schools. The game was played in Laramie and ended in a score of 10-0 in favor of Wyoming.

4. In 1931, the Wyoming State Legislature passed a law allowing women to serve on juries. Wyoming was the first state in the country to give women this right.

5. In 1970, astronaut Alan Shepard visited Wyoming to speak at a conference. Shepard was the first American in space and the fifth person to walk on the moon.
