On May 1, 1776, the New Jersey Provincial Congress voted unanimously to approve a resolution supporting the Declaration of Independence, making it only the third colony to do so.

On May 1, 1792, 24 brokers and merchants gathered under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street in New York City to sign the Buttonwood Agreement, which established the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Two of the signatories were from New Jersey: Samuel March and Nathan Prime.

On May 1, 1869, Philip Kearny III was appointed the first Grand Marshal of the Hoboken-based German-American Steuben Parade, which still takes place annually. Kearny was the grandson of General Philip Kearny, who served in the Civil War and was killed during the Battle of Chantilly in 1862.
