1. In 1865, the infamous Confederate raider Captain Henry Wirz was tried and found guilty of war crimes in Washington, D.C. Wirz was the commandant of the notorious Andersonville prison camp in Georgia, where thousands of Union soldiers died of disease, starvation, and exposure.

2. In 1902, the Chicago Daily Tribune reported that Cubs pitcher Jack Taylor had thrown a no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals the previous day. However, it was later discovered that a few Redbirds had actually gotten hits off Taylor. The game was retroactively changed to a one-hitter.

3. In 1927, the Illinois State Legislature passed the first laws in the country mandating school bus safety standards. The laws included requirements for safety equipment, driver training, and vehicle maintenance.

4. In 1977, the Chicago Blackhawks won their first-ever Stanley Cup, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games. The team was led by future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull.

5. In 2020, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced that he was extending the state's stay-at-home order until the end of May due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The order had originally been put in place in March and was already one of the longest-lasting in the country.
