1. In 1862, Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson engaged Union forces in the Battle of McDowell in Highland County, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). The battle was part of Jackson's Valley Campaign and resulted in a Confederate victory.

2. On May 10, 1908, the first Mother's Day celebration was held at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. The holiday, which was started by Anna Jarvis to honor her mother, quickly gained popularity across the country and became an official national holiday in 1914.

3. In 1921, the West Virginia State Capitol building in Charleston was dedicated. The building, which was designed by Cass Gilbert, features a gold-plated dome and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state.

4. On May 10, 1944, the USS West Virginia, which had been damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, was re-launched and returned to service in the Pacific theater during World War II.

5. In 1960, a massive fire broke out at the Bluefield State College campus in Bluefield, West Virginia, destroying several buildings and causing over a million dollars in damage. The cause of the fire was never determined, but it was believed to have started in the library.
